The Baylor Orthodontic Support Fund was established by the Baylor College of Dentistry orthodontic alumni. The fund, under the control of the Baylor Orthodontic Alumni Association, allows for initiatives and projects, which would not be possible utilizing College funds alone.
Robert E. Gaylord Endowed Chair in Orthodontics
In 1986, Dr. Phillip Campbell approached Dean Richard Bradley during a Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association Meeting about starting a fund-raising effort to honor his mentor and former chairman of the Department of Orthodontics, Dr. Robert E. Gaylord. Dr. Bradley gave approval to the idea which would ultimately provide Baylor College of Dentistry with its first endowed chair. Dr. Campbell enlisted two of his friends, Drs. Mike Allen and Marvin Stephens, to help with the project. Baylor College of Dentistry orthodontic alumni contributed $627,000, with additional contributions raised by Dr. Gaylord and Dr. Bradley along with Dr. Gaylord’s many friends, as well as grants from the Hillcrest Foundation, Communities Foundation of Texas, McDermott Foundation, and the Charles H. Tweed Orthodontic Study Group of Texas. This program brought over $1.2 million to the College in recognition of Dr. Gaylord's many contributions to the profession of orthodontics and as founder of the Graduate Department of Orthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry.
In 1994, Dr. David Carlson, Chair, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Director, Center for Craniofacial Research and Diagnosis, was named to the Robert E. Gaylord Endowed Chair in Orthodontics, the first endowed chair in the College's history. Dr. Phillip Campbell was then named to the Robert E. Gaylord Endowed Chair in 2006 by Dr. James Cole upon Dr. Carlson’s departure and currently serves in that capacity.
